The Gerald L. Ignace Indian Health Center offers culturally sensitive, trauma informed, medical, behavioral health, and social services for the Native American community in Milwaukee and surrounding. The GLIIHC Circles of Strength Program provides medical treatment, including Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner services, behavioral health treatment, crisis intervention, and victim advocacy for Native American’s who have experienced domestic violence, sexual violence, and/or human trafficking.

In 2016, the National Institute of Justice reported that 84.3% of AI women will experience violence in their lifetime.

In 2016, 5,712 Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls (MMIWG) cases were reported in the US, but only 116 of those cases were logged in the DOJ database.

Homicide is the third leading cause of death among American Indian and Alaska Native women between 10 and 24 years of age and the fifth leading cause of death for American Indian and Alaska Native women between 25 and 34 years of age.

In the U.S. and Canada, an average of 40 percent of the women who were victims of sex trafficking identified as American Indian or Alaskan Native.
